First Lonar Mahotsav to celebrate the biodiversity of the region
In Vidarbha's Buldhana district, lies Lonar Lake, a natural gem that is waiting to be discovered by the adventure enthusiasts. This saline lake, said to be created more than 52000 years ago by a meteor impact, is apparently the only known hyper velocity impact crater in basaltic rock on Earth. And now, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has decided to give it, its rightful place under the sun, by celebrating first Lonar Fest that aims to beckon domestic and international tourists to this amazing place...

Magical March
Sharing the plans about the forthcoming festival, general manager of MTDCSwati Kale, says, "We are planning to organise Lonar Mahotsav on March 3, 4 and 5. The idea behind this endeavour is to showcase this unique destination to adventure loving tourists across the globe because Lonar has the charisma to become the most sought-after destination. This festival is a part of CM Devendra Fadnavis's call to make 2017 — Visit Maharashtra year. With Tourism minister Jaykumar Rawal lending his full support to the cause of tourism, we plan to promote a lot of virginal destinations like Lonar."

Beyond the song and dance routine
This fest will not veer around the tried and true song and dance routine, says Swati and adds, "We plan to give a special flavour to this mahotsav, with thrust being on celebration of biodiversity. We want the tourists to unveil the enigma of the crater, with special day and night treks planned around the lake. There will be astronomy experts coming over to share important bits of information with the tourists. We will also conduct various workshops on biodiversity of the region."

Star-gazing and living in tents

Although MTDC has its resort at Lonar, there will be many other provisions made to add to the adventure quotient of the fest. Swati shares, "Along with the regular accommodation, we also plan to provide a lot of tents to those who seek a more authentic variety of adventure. Then there will be star-gazing activities organised, which will complete the entire experience in a fruitful manner."

Special incentives for youngsters

As a part of MTDC's tourism friendly endeavours, there are special packages and incentives planned for the youngsters. Swati reveals, "It is the youth that needs to get up close and personal with various beautiful locations and spots in and around Vidarbha. That is why we are giving 50 percent discount to college and school students for city tours as well as for mining tourism expeditions. It will add to the learning process of our youngsters and create a sense of belonging and pride in them."

Regional delicacies

Any celebration is incomplete without the right kind of delicacies. So, special care will be taken to ensure that foodies get to enjoy some regional delicacies, says Swati and adds, "All these details are being planned right now, and the endeavour is to make this fest a roaring success, so that it becomes an integral part of tourists' annual itinerary."
